What to expect

Assessment Overview (45–60 minutes)
Your child will complete baseline testing in key early reading skills, including:

  • Blending: Putting sounds together to make words
  • Segmenting: Breaking words into individual sounds
  • Sound Manipulation: Adding or removing sounds in words
  • Alphabet Code Knowledge: Understanding which letters and letter combinations represent sounds

I'll also use a standardised word reading test (if your child is under 11 years, 6 months) to compare your child’s reading with peers in the same school year.

This information helps me create a personalised intervention plan that meets your child where they’re at—so progress can begin right away.

Frequently asked questions

"What makes this different from tutoring?"

As a Speech Pathologist trained in providing an evidence-based Systematic Synthetic Phonics program, I will design a program that is child centred and tailored to the gaps in your child's knowledge. This ensures that the intervention I am providing is pitched at their current level of achievement.

"Does my child require a diagnosis to attend?"

No diagnosis is required to attend. The intervention provided is individualised and child-centred, so that it is suitable for neurodivergent and neurotypical learners.

"Will you help my child complete their assigned homework?"

No. The aim of the intervention is to build and consolidate the foundation skills required for reading and writing, to enable your child to better access in their year-level academic work.

"Do you complete  assessments to investigate language or speech skills?"

No. The only assessments provided are baseline tests of the underlying skills required for reading and writing, to identify the appropriate starting level for where intervention should begin. This starting level will be commensurate with your child's current skill level so they see progress from day 1.

"Do you provide any other forms of Speech Pathology therapy?"

Currently, I do not provide Speech Pathology assessment or therapy for oral language, speech sound disorders, stuttering, feeding or complex communication needs.

"Do I need to do any homework with my child in between sessions?"

The only 'homework' that is suggested, is to practice reading the learnt sounds and words, through decodable reading books. As part of your child's intervention, they have complimentary access to an online library of age and skill level-appropriate decodable readers.

"Do I have to bring my child to the clinic or is it just as good having sessions in my home?"

The choice is all yours. I do not charge for travel, as long as you live within ~20 minutes of Belmont.
